I was crying in the hallway one day during my developmental psych class because the bathrooms were being cleaned, otherwise I would have hidden in there. We were covering grief and end of life, and I couldn’t take it. It was just after the first anniversary of my best friend’s death. Well, the janitor came out of the bathroom, took one look at me, and sat down next to me. She asked me if I would like to talk about what’s wrong, and I told her about Michael. She sat with me for ages, just letting me cry. When I finally stopped, she helped me stand up, gave me a hug, and gave me a business card with her phone number on it. She told me to reach out to her if I felt like I ever needed anything. She didn’t have to do any of that, but she did. I’m not at that campus anymore, but I still have that card, and I think about her often.
