As a Catholic myself, I think the church needs to get on board with science, as it did with climate change and evolution, and recognize that a zygote and a fetus are not human beings. If we care at all about saving as many human lives as possible, we should be funding planned parenthood, supporting social welfare, and giving people free and open access to medical care. The problem is the influence of religion in politics, Catholicism is a very wide and diverse movement, therefore within it there are more conservative and more liberal doctrines. It is also true that in America Catholicism tends to be much more conservative than in Europe, where issues such as contraception or homosexuality (not marriage) have long been accepted. I was raised catholic, went to a catholic school, and all my health care is through a catholic hospital. Every time I go in for my yearly physical I get asked if I’m on birth control or if I want to be put on any. In my experience, Catholics have no issues with using or encouraging the use of birth control. First, I think it’s a simple question to ask. If the answer is that, yes, a government official agrees that their decisions will be based on the premise of a separation of church and state and a strict interpretation of the Constitution, and there is nothing glaringly contrary in their actions as a government representative, then we should all move on. Making abortions illegal doesn’t reduce the number of abortions, it just makes them more dangerous. Preventing unwanted pregnancies DOES reduce the number of abortions. Anyone who is anti-contraception and antiabortion is a hypocrite who needs to make a choice. If the Catholic Church really loved babies they would be lobbying FOR sex education and free access to contraceptives to minimize the need for abortions, which are primarily caused by lack of sex ed and access to contraception. If the fascist right really loved babies they would be pro medical care and child care and support for mothers in need.
