The problem is the influence of religion in politics, Catholicism is a very wide and diverse movement, therefore within it there are more conservative and more liberal doctrines. It is also true that in America Catholicism tends to be much more conservative than in Europe, where issues such as contraception or homosexuality (not marriage) have long been accepted. Opposition to gay marriage, contraception and abortion is common to all religions. I don't think that being Catholic in itself means that person is ultraconservative and opposes any progress, the problem is that person is in office because he or she is ultraconservative.
