I would argue that, while your main point is valid ("Poverty is not something that everyone can overcome through hard work, more often than not it is too much to overcome"), I would argue that "Work hard and don't give up" is not mutually exclusive to "We need to help the poor." I don't think that saying that dimishes the value of the story or sounds hypocritical. Yes, when people imply that ALL that's needed is hard work and grit, that's a problem, but as I said, I don't think those are mutually exclusive. You can tell people to work hard to improve their status, but you can also acknowledge that the current system is rigged in favor of the haves against the have nots.
