I had an experience similar to you. My parents were fairly well off, but I watched my parents scrimp and save where they could. My mother now is probably considered very wealthy, and still buys the cheapest damn shampoo and soap you can find. She has nice things but she is selective about them and saves her money elsewhere. I also had the advantage of spending a lot of time in the family business which was located in a pretty rough area and employed people who were pretty poor. I’ve come to enjoy the company of people who are not well off compared to the people who are now as a result. Their friendships are true and not based on status.
