It's a huge flaw of the system, honestly. When a judge dies or retires during a presidency, the replacement is likely to be skewed in favor of that presidency, and then they can stay there until they die or retire or somehow get impeached. End up with a long enough train of shitshows and you have a Court that is making decisions in favor of one party for far longer than the presidents and representatives stick around.
